multiple select in a view

Hi forum,

I have a view showing emails.

I have a requriment that the users wants to select some of the emails and click a custom-button, which will set a status on these mails. Today the are forced to open the emails one by one and then set the status and press save and close.

How can I archive this. Can anybody guide me in the right direction, My initial thoughts is to create a javescript that runs through the selected emails set the status and save. But how do I do that?
